Have
you guys wondered where we have been? We went to Central America (that group of Latin countries under Mexico and above Columbia).
We traveled around 4 countries while in Central America. On this trip we went to Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and EL Salvador.
We only have 1 country, Panama, to complete Central America. Let’s start this diary with our first destination: Flores,
Petan, Guatemala.
After
flying into Guatemala City we caught another flight on Taca Airlines to a town called Flores in the Province of Petan. The
airline was pretty nice…better than the American airplane we flew on to get to Guatemala. The town we stayed at is on
a little island in the middle of Lake Petan, the town is called Flores. We had a nice view of the lake shore from our room,
and our balcony looked over the lake and the nearby jungle. It’s just too bad that it rained a lot when we were there.
We decided to stay here because it was near to the ancient Mayan ruins & pyramids at Tikal. This place is one of the most
amazing archeological sites from an ancient civilization that you’ll ever see. It’s a bit hard getting to the
pyramids once you enter the park at Tikal….you have to hike along a jungle trail for some time before we even saw the
amazingly tall pyramids shooting high above the jungle. Mac was so amazed with everything he saw and followed our map like
he was searching for lost treasure in the jungle. He called the thousand year old temples and pyramids “Indian Castles”.
One of the most impressive pyramids we saw while wandering around Tikal was the “Jaguar Temple”. If you’ve ever seen the movie by Mel Gibson called “Apocalypto” then you should have a
good idea what these temples look like and what they were used for by the Mayan’s who used to live around them.
After
leaving Tikal we hired a van to drive us to the border of Belize, a Caribbean country located about 6 hours drive from where
we were in Guatemala. In my next diary I will tell you all about all the fun we had in Belize and the nice people we made
friends with while staying on the small island of Caye Caulker.
