After
leaving Belize we took the long road back to Flores, Guatemala, through jungle roads and muddy highways. It was a long road
trip for the 3 of us. Once we were back in Flores after the 6 hour drive from Belize we took Taca Airlines flight back to
Guatemala City and then another bus to the old Spanish colonial town of Antigua.
Antigua!
Remember
this name. Because Antigua is one of those magical places that any traveler show experience and see with their own eyes. I’m
not saying that everyone will love it like the Taj Mahal, but Antigua is a classic destination for people who love travel.
When we decided to go to this old town we thought we were only going to use it as a travel hub….just short stays to
get from one place to another around Guatemala. But after coming here we saw the old Spanish European style buildings, the
grand churches, and the cobble stone roads….and we thought that this is a place we’d love to stay in. There is
a large volcano that looms over the old city of Antigua which really makes this place feel magical. At one point in the 1700’s
Antigua was the Colonial Spanish Empire’s capital of all of Central America….so the Spaniards really invested
a lot of money into building this classic city. The only problem we had is that we weren’t prepared for the weather
there in Antigua. The city is at 5000 feet elevation, in the mountains, and it gets very chilly there. Plus it rained many
of the days we were there so it was difficult getting pictures of the city. We spent many days exploring this place and would
probably go back if we have the opportunity. If you’re still interested in hearing about our travels my next stop will
be Panajachel.
