Panajachel
is a town located high in the Guatemalan mountains and is on the shore of a crystal blue lake & is surrounded by volcanoes.
The lake is known as Lago Atitlan. It’s a beautiful place that backpackers and travelers have come to for decades. I
knew that it would be pretty there in Panajachel, but I had no idea that it would be so hard to get there. The road is good
but the road is also so, so curvy & winds through the mountains on hairpin turns. Even though the countryside was beautiful
we couldn’t even enjoy it because we started to feel sick. By the time we got up to the high elevation lookout which
gave us a beautiful view of the blue lake and volcanoes poor little Mac couldn’t hold his tummy. He just threw up! But
I too was starting to feel sick and the only thing that would help me from not throwing up was having the window on our bus
open. The fresh air made me feel a little better but some French girl behind me kept trying to reach over and close the window
because she was cold. She was cold….but I was sick…and if she didn’t want throw up on her and everyone around
me then she better keep that window open..haha.
The
town of Panajachel was not that great…it actually reminded me of Kho San Rd. There were so many little tourist shops
and travel agencies, restaurants and bars….and they even had little red tuk tuks that cruised up and down the crowded
street. Maybe the town wasn’t beautiful but the surrounding and the lake were very pretty. Mac wanted to go down to
the lake shore and swim so we sat down on the sand and watched him swim in the warm water. McKinley was feeling much better
after getting in the water. We just enjoyed the view of the two large volcanos looming over the lake across from us. We were
supposed to stay the night there at a bungalow but it was so hard getting there and we had to get to Honduras in two days.
We knew if we stayed at the lake it would take forever to get to Honduras…..and road travel in Central America is not
that easy. So, after our visit to Panajachel and Lake Atitlan we traveled back to Antigua and waited a night before catching
a bus to our next destination…….Honduras
